Aziz's assets valued at Rs500m

ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz continued to be among the richest MPs with declared assets in and outside Pakistan valued at approximately Rs500 million, according to the statements that members of parliament including Aziz filed with the Election Commission for the year 2005-06.

But surprisingly, the fresh statement by the prime minister shows he is poorer by a staggering figure of over Rs3 billion than the wealth he declared three years earlier.

There is no explanation how did he lose that much.

The Election Commission has released a voluminous copy spanning 1,334 pages that encapsulates the assets and liabilities of all the law makers who are mandated to annually declare their assets and liabilities.

The statements, however, project a much diminished state of financial status of these MPs who take refuge behind technicalities to hide their real worth. Lawmakers known to be fabulously rich emerge even below the middle income groups in their statements.

The usual subterfuge is to value their assets according to original price rather than their current market assessment.

Strangely, most of the known rich own no car in their names, while they are seen driving latest high-powered vehicles. However, the prime minister does own a car.

PML chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain who is known to own several industrial units, urban land and houses, has declared he is worth only Rs130 million.

Prime Minister Aziz has a house in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) in Karachi whose value is shown at only Rs450,00 against market value of over Rs70 million.

Similarly a plot in the DHA that cost him only Rs125,000 is actually priced at over Rs25 million.
